"Indian start-up flight-tests autonomous pharmaceutical factory in near-space conditions"
Microgravity
near-weightless condition in orbital space enabling unique molecular and crystal behaviour impossible on Earth.
IN-SPACe
autonomous body under Department of Space that authorises and facilitates private entities in India's space sector.
India's space sector underwent a structural transformation with the Space Sector Reforms of 2020, which dismantled the state monopoly that had defined the programme since its inception. Two institutions were central to this shift: IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), an autonomous body under the Department of Space that facilitates, promotes, and authorises private entities to conduct space activities; and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO's commercial arm responsible for technology transfer and launch services. Simultaneously, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) at Sriharikota was opened to private launch providers, giving startups access to world-class infrastructure that had previously been exclusively governmental.
The policy rationale was both economic and strategic. India's share of the global space economy — valued at over $400 billion — was disproportionately small relative to its technical capability. The government set a target of capturing 10% of the global space economy by 2030, which requires not merely ISRO missions but a thriving private ecosystem spanning launch vehicles, satellite manufacturing, and downstream applications. This ecosystem has since produced a new generation of spacetech startups, with Skyroot Aerospace achieving India's first private orbital launch and Agnikul Cosmos conducting the world's first flight using a fully 3D-printed rocket engine. The emergence of application-layer startups — those using space as a platform for non-launch services — represents the next frontier of this ecosystem.
Space-based pharmaceutical manufacturing exploits a fundamental physical difference between Earth and orbital environments: the absence of significant gravitational force, or microgravity. On Earth, gravity drives convection currents in liquids, causes sedimentation in solutions, and introduces mechanical stresses during crystal growth — all of which constrain the purity, structure, and yield of certain pharmaceutical compounds. In microgravity, molecular movement and crystal growth occur in ways that are physically impossible to replicate terrestrially, enabling the formation of novel molecular structures, higher-purity protein crystals, and entirely new synthesis pathways. Research conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS) has demonstrated these advantages for decades, but all such experiments required human supervision and were constrained by the ISS's shared-use, government-operated model.
The concept of a dedicated, autonomous orbital pharmaceutical factory addresses these constraints directly. …
