BackgroundCore Concept

Background

Bees are among the most economically significant insects on the planet, functioning as the primary pollinators of flowering plants that underpin global food systems. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that pollinators — predominantly bees — are responsible for nearly one-third of global crop output, enhancing yields for 87 of 115 leading food crops worldwide. In India, this ecological service is particularly consequential given the country's agrarian economy: mustard fields in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, apple orchards in Himachal Pradesh, and a wide range of oilseed and horticultural crops depend critically on bee pollination for both yield and nutritional quality. As NCERT social science texts note, the use of synthetic chemicals in modern agriculture has disrupted ecosystems by harming bees, making pollinator protection a sustainability imperative alongside productivity goals.

India's formal policy engagement with apiculture gained momentum through the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), launched under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to promote scientific beekeeping, increase honey production, and support farmer income diversification. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) provides export promotion support for honey and allied bee products. Complementing these, the government has encouraged Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) as institutional vehicles to aggregate smallholder beekeepers, reduce compliance costs, and improve market access — a model consistent with the broader push to formalise and scale India's agricultural value chains.

The Topic Explained

Apiculture — the managed farming of honey bees — delivers two distinct categories of economic value. The first is the direct product value: honey, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, and pollen, which together constitute a global bee products market valued at approximately $12.7 billion (as of recent estimates). The second, and far larger, is the indirect ecosystem service value: pollination, which is unpriced in market terms yet underpins the productivity of a vast share of India's agricultural output. This duality — a priced commodity sector sitting atop an unpriced ecological service — makes apiculture uniquely important for both agricultural economics and environmental governance.

India has emerged as the second-largest producer of honey globally (after China) and the third-largest exporter by value (after China and New Zealand). Domestic production has nearly doubled over the past decade, from approximately 76,000 tonnes in 2013-14 to roughly 1,51,000 tonnes in 2025-26. …
