"Anima Anandkumar Named TIME100 AI for Neural Operators Advancing Science"
Neural Operators
AI models that learn mappings between functions, enabling multi-scale physical simulation.
FourCastNet
An AI weather forecasting model using Neural Operators, thousands of times faster than conventional methods.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) began as an attempt to simulate human cognitive functions, learning, reasoning, and problem-solving, in machines. Early AI systems were rule-based and narrow, capable only of tasks explicitly programmed by humans. The shift to machine learning allowed systems to learn patterns from data rather than from fixed rules. A further leap came with deep learning, which uses layered neural networks to process complex, high-dimensional data such as images, text, and speech.
For decades, AI and the physical sciences operated largely in parallel. Scientific simulation, modelling weather, fluid dynamics, nuclear reactions, or molecular behaviour, relied on classical numerical methods and supercomputers. These methods are accurate but extremely slow and computationally expensive. The idea of using AI to replace or accelerate these simulations is relatively recent, and it represents one of the most consequential frontiers in applied science today.
India has a strong tradition of contributing to this frontier through its diaspora. Scientists trained at institutions such as IIT Madras and IIT Bombay have gone on to lead foundational AI research at top global universities and technology companies. This pattern of academic excellence feeding into global scientific leadership is itself a recurring theme in UPSC's coverage of Indian achievements in science and technology.
Neural Operators are a class of AI models designed to learn and solve differential equations, the mathematical language of physical processes. Traditional AI models learn mappings between fixed-dimensional inputs and outputs. Neural Operators go further: they learn mappings between functions, which means they can generalise across different resolutions and scales of a physical system. This makes them far more powerful for scientific simulation than standard neural networks.
The practical significance is enormous. Physical simulations that once required hours or days on a supercomputer can, using Neural Operator-based methods, be completed in seconds. Anima Anandkumar's research group at Caltech pioneered this approach. One direct product is FourCastNet, a weather forecasting model built with her team at NVIDIA that can generate forecasts thousands of times faster than conventional numerical weather prediction systems. …
