BackgroundCore Concept

Background

India's freight sector is one of the largest contributors to road transport emissions. Heavy trucks account for a disproportionate share of fuel consumption and pollution relative to their numbers. The government has pursued electric vehicle adoption primarily through the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme, which has focused largely on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and buses. Heavy-duty freight vehicles, long-haul trucks, have remained at the margins of electrification policy, partly because of range anxiety, high upfront costs, and the absence of a dedicated charging network along freight corridors.

India's broader clean energy commitments provide the policy backdrop. The country has pledged 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. Transport electrification is a key lever for meeting these targets, since road transport contributes significantly to urban air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) and successive FAME phases have built the foundational policy architecture, but freight electrification has lacked a corridor-specific, data-driven planning model, until now.

The Topic Explained

Electric truck corridors are dedicated stretches of highway where charging infrastructure is planned and deployed specifically for heavy commercial electric vehicles. Unlike passenger EV charging, freight charging must account for vehicle weight, payload, duty cycles, and the commercial imperative of minimising downtime. Charging stations for trucks typically require higher power outputs, fast or ultra-fast DC chargers, and must be spaced to match truck range and driver rest requirements.

The Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEBL) and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) have jointly studied the 622-km stretch of NH 66 from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram. The study is the first of its kind in India for a freight corridor. …

S&Teasy

Which of the following best describes the significance of using FASTag and GPS data in the KSEBL-ICCT electric truck corridor study?

AIt enabled real-time toll collection to fund the corridor's charging infrastructure.
BIt provided actual freight movement patterns to model charger demand, replacing assumption-based planning.
CIt allowed the study to track individual truck drivers' compliance with emission norms.
DIt was used to identify which trucks were eligible for FAME scheme subsidies along the corridor.
