"GSLV-F17 Places EOS-05 in Geosynchronous Orbit from Sriharikota"
Geosynchronous Orbit (GSO)
orbit at ~36,000 km where a satellite matches Earth's rotation, staying over the same region continuously.
Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit
an intermediate elliptical orbit from which a satellite raises itself to final Geosynchronous orbit using onboard propulsion.
India's Earth observation satellite programme has evolved steadily since the early days of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The programme began with the IRS (Indian Remote Sensing) series, which provided imagery for agriculture, land use, water resources, and disaster management. Over time, ISRO consolidated these missions under the EOS (Earth Observation Satellite) naming convention, bringing together optical, radar, and thermal imaging capabilities under a unified brand. The Cartosat series focused on cartographic and urban planning applications, while the Resourcesat and Oceansat series addressed agricultural and oceanic monitoring respectively.
A persistent gap in India's Earth observation architecture has been the absence of a dedicated imaging satellite in Geosynchronous orbit. Most remote sensing satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which offers high spatial resolution but limits revisit frequency over any given location. A geosynchronous satellite, positioned approximately 36,000 km above the Earth, can stare continuously at the same region, enabling near-real-time monitoring. This capability is especially valuable for disaster response, border surveillance, and agricultural stress detection. The EOS-03 mission, launched in August 2021 aboard GSLV-F10, was India's first attempt to fill this gap. It failed when the cryogenic upper stage did not ignite, leaving the satellite stranded. EOS-05 is the direct replacement for that mission.
The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) is a three-stage rocket developed by ISRO. Its first stage uses solid propellant, the second uses liquid propellant, and the third is a Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) using liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The cryogenic stage is the most technically demanding component. India developed its own cryogenic engine, the CE-7.5, after technology transfer was denied by Russia under US pressure in the 1990s. This indigenous cryogenic capability is central to ISRO's ability to launch heavier satellites into higher orbits.
The GSLV-F17 mission placed EOS-05 into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO), from which the satellite's own propulsion system will raise it progressively to the final Geosynchronous orbit at ~36,000 km. …
