Background

India's school and higher-education system has long been critiqued for prioritising rote learning and examination performance over critical thinking. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) guaranteed access to schooling but left the quality of teaching largely unaddressed. National education policies, including the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, have since called for a shift toward competency-based learning, reduced curriculum load, and the cultivation of higher-order thinking skills. Yet classroom practice has been slow to change. Teachers are still largely evaluated on examination results, and students are sorted into winners and losers by standardised tests.

The arrival of AI-powered tools, search engines, large language models, voice assistants, has sharpened this tension. When a student can retrieve any factual answer in seconds, the traditional teacher-as-information-source model loses its rationale. This is not a new concern: every major technological shift, from the printing press to the internet, has prompted questions about the teacher's role. What is new is the speed and breadth of AI's reach into everyday learning environments, making the question urgent rather than theoretical.

A teacher who primarily delivers content is now in direct competition with tools that deliver content faster, more comprehensively, and on demand. The teacher's comparative advantage lies elsewhere: in relationship, in moral guidance, and in the cultivation of reasoning.

The Socratic method, teaching by questioning rather than telling, drawing out what a student already partially knows, is offered as the model most resistant to AI substitution. Socrates worked through dialogue (elenchus), never writing anything down. Confucius taught through shared living and personal relationship. These traditions, East and West, locate learning in a human bond that no algorithm can replicate. …
