"Belgium Pitches Antwerp-Bruges Port as India-EU Trade Gateway"
India-EU FTA
A proposed free trade agreement between India and all 27 EU member states, under negotiation since 2007.
Port of Antwerp-Bruges
One of Europe's largest cargo ports, pitched as India's preferred trade gateway into the EU.
India and Belgium share a relationship built on democratic values, open-market orientation, and long-standing commercial ties. Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and hosts the headquarters of both NATO and key EU institutions in Brussels. This gives it outsized diplomatic weight relative to its size. The most historically visible commercial thread connecting the two economies has been the Antwerp diamond trade, where Indian-origin merchants have operated for decades. India, particularly Surat and Mumbai, dominates the global cutting and polishing of diamonds, while Antwerp remains the world's leading diamond trading hub. This complementarity has sustained ties between the two countries for over a century.
India's broader European engagement has been shaped by the long-running India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which have been under discussion for roughly 25 years. Talks were formally launched in 2007, suspended in 2013 over differences on tariffs, intellectual property, and government procurement, and resumed in 2022. The Russia-Ukraine conflict accelerated Europe's desire to diversify supply chains, creating fresh urgency on both sides. India's defence partnerships with Western democracies have also deepened steadily over the past decade. Agreements with France, the United States, and the United Kingdom on co-production and technology transfer have set a template. Engagement with NATO-aligned European partners like Belgium fits within this broader pattern.
The India-EU FTA, when concluded, would be one of the most significant trade agreements India has ever signed. The EU collectively represents approximately $24 trillion in market size and accounts for roughly a quarter of global GDP and a third of world trade. An agreement covering all 27 EU member states would give Indian exporters preferential access to this vast market. The proposed deal is expected to eliminate or reduce tariffs on more than 95% of goods traded between India and the EU, covering sectors from pharmaceuticals and textiles to automobiles and chemicals.
India's defence cooperation with European partners operates on several tracks. The first is technology transfer and co-development. India seeks access to advanced defence technologies while offering its large manufacturing base and growing domestic market as incentives. The Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India frameworks provide the policy architecture for this. …
