"India's Dedicated Freight Corridor Network Expands to 2,843 km with New Sections"
Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC)
A rail route reserved exclusively for freight trains, built to higher engineering specifications than the shared network.
DFCCIL
Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited; the government company that builds and operates DFCs.
Indian Railways is the world's fourth-largest rail network. Freight revenue has historically cross-subsidised passenger fares, but railways steadily lost freight market share to road transport over decades. High logistics costs, estimated at around 13–14% of GDP, reduce the competitiveness of Indian exports compared to global benchmarks of around 8%. The government identified dedicated, freight-only rail infrastructure as the structural solution.
The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) was established under the Companies Act to plan, build, and operate freight-only corridors. These corridors are engineered to different specifications than the mixed-use network: higher axle loads, higher clearances, and electric traction throughout. This allows heavier, faster, and longer trains, including double-stack container trains, that cannot run on the shared passenger-freight network. The broader policy framework includes the National Logistics Policy (NLP), which targets reducing logistics costs to under 8% of GDP, and the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which integrates multimodal connectivity across ports, rail, and road.
Two major DFCs are currently operational. The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) runs approximately 1,337 km from New Sahnewal in Punjab to New Sonnagar in Bihar, passing through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. It serves some of India's most important industrial and manufacturing regions. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) runs approximately 1,506 km from New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to New JNPT in Maharashtra, passing through Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Together, the two corridors form a network of around 2,843 km.
The WDFC is particularly significant for port logistics. It connects major industrial zones to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), India's largest container port. Faster rail evacuation of containers from JNPT reduces container dwell time at the port, improving port efficiency and reducing costs for exporters. …
What is the significance of Industrial Corridors in India? Identifying industrial corridors, explain their main characteristics.
'Investment in infrastructure is essential for more rapid and inclusive economic growth.' Discuss in the light of India's experience.
Consider the following pairs:
Port — Well known as
