Background

The Swaminarayan Sampraday belongs to the broad tradition of Vaishnava bhakti that reshaped religious life across India from the medieval period onward. As NCERT's history curriculum notes, bhakti traditions emerged partly as a challenge to rigid Brahmanical orthodoxy, emphasising personal devotion (bhakti), service (seva), and direct access to the divine over ritual hierarchy. In Gujarat and north India, this tradition produced a series of saint-reformers who combined theological innovation with social concern. The Bhakti movement received one of its most significant re-orientations through figures like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Bengal, who emphasised ecstatic devotion and challenged caste boundaries within Vaishnavism. A parallel re-orientation occurred in Gujarat in the early nineteenth century through Sahajanand Swami, who founded the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

Sahajanand Swami was born Ghanshyam Pande in Chhapaiya village near Ayodhya in 1781. He was initiated as a disciple of Swami Ramanand in 1802 and subsequently came to be revered as Lord Swaminarayan. He was a celibate and had no biological heirs. His sampraday was notable for advocating women's equality and rights in Gujarat at a time when such advocacy was rare. He is credited with opposing practices that degraded women and lower castes, placing his movement within the reformist current of nineteenth-century Hinduism. After his death, the sampraday divided into two main dioceses, the Vadtal (Nadiad) Gadi and the Ahmedabad Gadi, administered by two of his nephews. The Ahmedabad Gadi follows a dynastic leadership tradition where Acharyas marry, while their sadhus practice celibacy.

The Topic Explained

The Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) was founded in 1907 by Shastri Maharaj, who broke away from the Vadtal diocese in 1905. The name derives from Bochasan village in Anand district, Gujarat. BAPS is considered the largest of the Swaminarayan splinter groups and is best known internationally for its Akshardham series of temple complexes. The Vadtal diocese regards itself as the parent body from which at least six splinter groups emerged.

A defining feature of Swaminarayan Hinduism is the strict separation of men and women during temple worship, particularly for monastics (swamis) who have taken vows of celibacy. Scholars note that this practice is part of the monk's personal spiritual discipline and is not intended to be imposed on society at large. Within the broader BAPS community, the rest of the fellowship, reportedly more than 50 percent of whom are women, is fully integrated with contemporary social norms. …
