"India Launches Indigenously Built Ocean Research Vessel ORV Sagar Manthan"
Deep Ocean Mission (DOM)
India's flagship programme for deep-sea exploration, organised into six verticals under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Samudrayaan
DOM sub-project developing Matsya-6000, a crewed submersible for 6,000-metre depth exploration.
India's coastline stretches approximately 11,100 km, and the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covers about 2.37 million sq km of ocean. The Indian Ocean is the third-largest ocean in the world. It carries half of the world's container ships, one-third of bulk cargo, and two-thirds of global oil shipments. Despite this strategic position, India historically depended on foreign-built research vessels and foreign ocean-science platforms to study its own maritime domain.
The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), is India's nodal agency for polar and ocean science. NCPOR operates India's Antarctic stations (Maitri and Bharati) and manages the Arctic research station Himadri at Svalbard, Norway. An earlier NCPOR instrument, IndARC, was India's first underwater moored observatory deployed in the Arctic Ocean to study sea-ice and climate dynamics, a landmark in India's remote ocean-science capability. For decades, NCPOR's primary surface research platform was ORV Sagar Kanya, procured from Germany in 1983. At 43 years old, Sagar Kanya represents the era when India had no domestic capacity to build such complex vessels.
The Deep Ocean Mission (DOM), launched by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is India's flagship programme for systematic exploration of the deep sea. It is organised into six verticals, covering deep-sea mining technology, ocean climate change advisory services, deep-ocean survey and exploration, energy and freshwater from the ocean, advanced marine station for ocean biology, and ocean technology and services. The most well-known sub-project is Samudrayaan, under which Matsya-6000, a crewed submersible designed to carry 3 persons to a depth of 6,000 metres, is being developed. ORV Sagar Manthan is built under Vertical-4 of DOM, focused on deep ocean survey and exploration.
ORV Sagar Manthan is India's first advanced ocean research vessel designed and built domestically. It was constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), a defence public sector undertaking, for NCPOR at an approximate cost of Rs. 840 crore. The vessel is an all-weather, multidisciplinary platform engineered to operate even in the Southern Ocean, with a projected service life of 30 years.
The vessel's scientific capabilities are wide-ranging. It carries multibeam bathymetry systems for mapping the ocean floor in three dimensions, multichannel seismic systems for sub-seafloor profiling, and CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) profiling instruments for water-column sampling. It can deploy Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) for deep-sea exploration without putting crew at risk. …
