"India Competes in 63 Skills at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, Debuts in Eleven New Categories"
WorldSkills International
global non-profit body that organises the world's largest biennial vocational skills competition across 60+ categories.
National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF)
nationally integrated framework organising qualifications by levels of knowledge, skills, and aptitude to enable comparability.
India's formal skill development architecture took shape with the creation of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in 2014, the first dedicated ministry for this purpose. The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a public-private partnership body under MSDE, serves as the primary institutional driver for industry-linked training and international skill benchmarking. The flagship Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), administered by MSDE (not the Ministry of Labour and Employment), aims to impart short-term and recognition-of-prior-learning training to youth. Critically, PMKVY aligns competencies with the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF), a nationally integrated framework that organises qualifications across levels of knowledge, skills, and aptitude. The scheme also covers soft skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and digital literacy, reflecting the understanding that employability requires more than technical competence alone.
The National Education Policy 2020 reinforced this direction by acknowledging that automation and artificial intelligence are displacing unskilled jobs globally, while demand for skilled workers in mathematics, data science, biology, and advanced manufacturing is rising sharply. India's skilling ecosystem has therefore been pushed to move beyond traditional trades toward advanced technologies, healthcare, digital design, and intelligent systems. WorldSkills International, the global body that organises the biennial WorldSkills Competition, provides the most credible external benchmark for this transition, as it tests vocational and technical skills against global industry standards across dozens of categories.
WorldSkills International is a non-profit organisation that runs the world's largest vocational skills competition. Participating countries send competitors who are typically under 25 years of age, and they are judged against internationally standardised criteria developed with industry input. The competition covers a wide spectrum: traditional trades such as welding and carpentry, advanced manufacturing, healthcare technologies, digital and creative industries, and emerging fields such as drone systems and intelligent security. Winning a medal or even a high rank at WorldSkills is considered a credible signal of a country's vocational training quality.
India's WorldSkills journey illustrates the trajectory of its skilling ambitions. The country was ranked 29th at WorldSkills in 2015 and climbed to 13th position in 2024, a significant improvement over roughly a decade. India also secured 8th rank in Asia at WorldSkills Asia 2025. These rankings reflect both the expansion of participation and improvements in preparation quality, driven by NSDC's collaboration with industry partners, training institutions, and domain experts. …
