"BRICS Forum Pushes Women-Led Businesses Into Global Value Chains"
BRICS Women's Business Alliance (WBA)
Official BRICS mechanism established in 2020 to integrate women-led enterprises into global value chains.
Frugal innovation
Resource-efficient business models developed under constrained conditions, often commercially transferable to other emerging markets.
BRICS began as a grouping of five major emerging economies, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and has since expanded significantly. At the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia, the bloc admitted new full members, including Indonesia, bringing the total membership to 21 countries when partner states are counted. This expansion reflects BRICS's ambition to represent a broader coalition of the Global South, giving it greater weight in discussions on trade, finance, and development.
Within this expanded grouping, the BRICS Women's Business Alliance (WBA) was established in 2020 as an official cooperation mechanism. Its mandate is to increase women's economic participation and leadership across member countries, and to integrate women-led enterprises into global value chains. The WBA operates through national chapters in each member country and convenes at forums alongside major BRICS summits and ministerial meetings.
India's engagement with the UAE adds a separate but important layer. The I2U2 grouping, comprising India, Israel, UAE, and the United States, represents India's multi-vector approach to partnerships. The UAE functions simultaneously as a BRICS partner state, an I2U2 member, and a major hub for Indian trade and diaspora. This dual positioning means that initiatives emerging from BRICS forums, including platforms for women entrepreneurs, can intersect with India's bilateral and minilateral commitments in ways that create both opportunities and strategic complexity.
Women-led businesses across BRICS face a common set of structural barriers. These include limited access to cross-border markets, financing gaps, regulatory asymmetries between member countries, and weak integration into regional and global value chains. While women are estimated to lead or play a major role in approximately 80 per cent of MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) across BRICS countries, their share of formal cross-border trade and investment remains disproportionately small.
The BRICS Women's Business Alliance addresses this gap through three broad mechanisms. First, it builds networks among women entrepreneurs across member countries, enabling peer learning and business matching. Second, it advocates for dedicated financing instruments for women-led and MSME-scale enterprises. …
