"G20 Ministers Agree on Secure, Affordable, Reliable Energy Goals"
G20 Energy Abundance
A G20 track addressing energy security, baseload, permitting, and critical minerals.
Energy security
Reliable, affordable and sustainable access to energy supplies for economic activity.
The G20 evolved from a finance-ministers' forum into the premier multilateral platform for global economic governance and sectoral cooperation. Energy issues are now a standing strategic priority because energy underpins growth, industrialisation and digitalisation. India combines a domestic reform trajectory with active multilateral diplomacy to secure resources, technology and finance for its transition. Domestic policy has expanded supply from renewables while preserving baseload and system reliability through reforms in market design and permitting.
India's energy posture rests on three complementary pillars. First, scaling low-carbon generation: installed electricity generation capacity has reached 552 GW, with more than half from non-fossil sources. Second, institutional leadership in multilateral clean-energy initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the OSOWOG concept, and the Global Biofuels Alliance provides diplomatic leverage for technology and finance flows. Third, regulatory modernization, digital single-window clearances and integrated infrastructure planning, aims to reduce time and uncertainty for investors.
The G20 Energy Abundance track organises ministerial work around cross-cutting challenges: secure affordable baseload, permitting and regulatory efficiency, and critical minerals and resilient supply chains. "Baseload" here refers to continuous, reliable power services required by industry and essential services, which policy must secure alongside intermittent renewables. Permitting and regulatory efficiency addresses predictable timelines, transparent procedures and use of digital tools to reduce project delays.
Critical minerals underpin batteries, grid technologies and low-carbon manufacturing. …
