"IITs Need Early-Warning Systems For Student Mental Health"
Early-warning system
mechanism to detect distress signals before a crisis, not only after it becomes visible.
Flexible academics
assessment pathways adapted to varied student ability without lowering the required standard.
Student suicides in India's higher educational institutions, including the IITs, sit at the intersection of constitutional guarantees and weak institutional implementation. Article 21 guarantees the right to life with dignity, which courts have read to include the right to a safe and dignified learning environment. Article 41, a Directive Principle, obliges the state to provide public assistance in cases of distress. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 decriminalised suicide attempts and recognised mental health care as a right, but implementation inside educational institutions has remained weak. Following a series of suicides in coaching hubs and premier institutes, the Supreme Court has directed higher educational institutions to put structured mental health protocols in place, building on the University Grants Commission's guidelines for suicide prevention on campuses. Despite these steps, IITs have recorded suicides year after year, showing that admission to a premier institution does not guarantee psychological safety.
The National Crime Records Bureau recorded 14,488 student suicides in 2024, the highest figure ever, a rise of about 72% since 2013. Student suicides now make up 8.5% of all suicides in the country, and in 2021 they exceeded farmer suicides for the first time. This scale explains why the recent suicides across IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Guwahati drew national attention. They are not isolated tragedies but symptoms of a structural problem in how elite technical education is organised.
Most institutional responses to student distress in India are curative, not preventive. This mirrors a wider pattern in India's public healthcare system, which has historically emphasised curative care over preventive, promotive and rehabilitative care, with actual service delivery decentralised to the states. In the same way, IIT wellness cells, helplines and counselling services intervene only after a student's distress becomes visible, rather than detecting vulnerability early. A student experiencing academic decline, silent withdrawal, or growing anxiety may show no signal a counsellor can act on until the point of crisis. This is a preventive-versus-curative gap, not simply a resourcing gap.
An early-warning system addresses this gap by widening who watches for warning signs. Teachers, mentors, parents, roommates and close friends can flag behavioural changes long before a formal referral is triggered. …
