"India-EU Free Trade Agreement Signing Set for December 16"
BTIA
the Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement, the original 2007 name for India-EU trade talks.
European Commission
the EU body that negotiates trade deals and finalises treaty text on the bloc's behalf.
Negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the European Union did not begin recently. They started in 2007 under the name Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA). Talks stalled by 2013 over disagreements on market access, tariff lines in sectors like automobiles and dairy, and data protection standards. After a long pause, negotiations resumed in June 2022 under the current FTA framework and were concluded in January 2026. This history matters because it shows how a decade of stalled talks eventually produced an agreement, once both sides agreed to leave the most contentious issues aside rather than let disagreement block the whole deal.
The renewed momentum followed a broader shift in the EU's own foreign policy posture. The EU-India Strategic Partnership was formally upgraded in 2020, moving the relationship beyond trade into security and technology cooperation. Europe's experience of economic coercion by China, and its exposure to weaponised energy dependencies, pushed Brussels toward closer ties with democratic partners like India. For India, this fits within a wider strategy of multi-alignment, engaging multiple major powers such as the Quad and I2U2 without binding itself to any single bloc. The FTA and an accompanying Security and Defence Partnership together represent the largest application of this strategy so far.
The FTA covers a market of roughly 2 billion consumers and about a quarter of global GDP. It eliminates or reduces tariffs on over 96% of traded goods and sets rules for services, the digital economy, and technology cooperation. For India, it offers preferential access to Europe's large consumer market and a cushion against protectionist shocks elsewhere. For the EU, it is a central part of its 'China Plus One' diversification strategy, reducing dependence on a single manufacturing and trade partner.
Ratification of a trade deal in the EU follows a specific institutional sequence. …
