"India Hosts 18th BRICS Summit Amid West Asia Tensions"
BRICS
Grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and newer members formed in 2009.
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
Cold War-era platform of nations refusing alignment with US or Soviet blocs.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) emerged from the 1955 Bandung Conference and was institutionalised at the 1961 Belgrade Summit. It gave newly independent nations, including India, a platform to reject Cold War bloc politics and campaign for decolonisation. After the Cold War, NAM's coherence declined. BRICS took its place as the leading platform for coordinating the interests of major developing economies.
BRICS was formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined in 2010, completing the acronym. The Fortaleza Declaration of 2014 created the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement, giving members financing options outside the World Bank and IMF. The grouping later expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE, and Indonesia became a full member at the 16th Summit held under Russia's chairship in Kazan.
India's foreign policy today runs on multiple, overlapping tracks. It is a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), while also being part of the Quad and the I2U2 grouping with Israel, the UAE and the United States. This layered membership is the practical expression of what officials call multi-alignment: engaging every major power bloc without formally aligning with any one of them.
BRICS operates through annual summits with a rotating chairship and consensus-based declarations rather than binding rules. Its stated goal is reform, not confrontation: a more representative UN Security Council, fairer voting shares at the IMF and World Bank, and rule-making space for the Global South in areas like artificial intelligence and trade. This distinguishes it from NAM, which was primarily a political movement built around the right to self-determination and freedom from colonial control.
The grouping's internal diversity is its defining feature and its biggest constraint. …
