"Can the Chinese Yuan Ever Replace the US Dollar?"
Exorbitant privilege
the unique advantage letting a reserve-currency issuer finance imports by printing its own money.
SWIFT
global financial messaging network banks use to instruct and confirm cross-border payments.
Global currency dominance is not fixed by treaty. It is built on decades of trust and habit. The US dollar became the world's reserve currency after the Bretton Woods Conference of 1944, which pegged currencies to a gold-backed dollar. Even after that system collapsed in the early 1970s, the dollar kept its position because of deep US financial markets, reliable rule of law, and the sheer size of the American economy. Roughly half of world trade is invoiced in dollars. Over half of global foreign exchange reserves are held in dollar assets.
Not every currency can play this role. Full convertibility means a currency can be freely exchanged for another without government restriction. The Indian rupee has only limited convertibility. India restricts free movement of capital. This is why foreigners rarely hold rupees as savings. If India prints more money, that money mostly stays inside India and fuels domestic inflation instead of crossing borders. The dollar, euro, yen and pound are all fully convertible. This difference is central to why only the US enjoys what economists call the 'exorbitant privilege', the ability to print money to buy goods abroad while others willingly lend that money back by buying US bonds.
Two payment systems anchor this story. SWIFT is the global financial messaging network banks use to instruct cross-border payments, and it is dominated by dollar settlement. China built its own system, the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), which settles trade directly in yuan and bypasses SWIFT altogether. A growing number of banks worldwide have signed up for CIPS even as yuan's share on SWIFT itself has fluctuated.
China's economic weight underpins the yuan's ambitions. Its GDP is close to $21 trillion, still well behind the US's roughly $32 trillion, but larger than the entire Euro area, which sits under $20 trillion. …
