"US and China Signal Managed Rivalry After Washington Summit"
Strategic stability
a state where major powers manage rivalry through agreed limits rather than open confrontation.
Rare earths
a group of minerals critical for electronics, defence and clean-energy manufacturing, dominated by Chinese processing.
US-China relations moved from deep economic interdependence, especially after China's entry into the World Trade Organisation, toward open confrontation over the past decade. Tariff escalation between Washington and Beijing was followed by China restricting exports of rare earths and critical minerals, materials essential for defence equipment, electronics and clean-energy manufacturing. This exposed real vulnerabilities in American supply chains and gave China durable new leverage in negotiations. It is against this backdrop that the recent Trump-Xi summit in Washington took place.
India's own China policy has long assumed that Washington viewed a close India-US partnership as a natural hedge against Chinese influence in the region. This assumption grew out of decades of parallel trends: improving India-China ties since the late 1980s alongside rapidly expanding India-China trade, even as India's own security establishment continued to treat China as its principal long-term challenge. The current phase of calibrated US-China engagement forces a re-examination of that older assumption, because Washington's tone toward Beijing has visibly softened even as tariff pressure on India has increased.
The optics of the summit were unusually elaborate. The reception given to the Chinese leader, including a personal welcome and a grand state dinner, was compared to the last time a US President accorded a foreign leader similar honour: President John F. Kennedy's reception of British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in 1962. The concrete deliverables were more modest. Both leaders agreed to meet twice more this year, at the APEC summit in Shenzhen and the G-20 summit in Miami, an unusually high four meetings within one year. …
