Caste in India functions as a graded system of structural inequality, not merely individual prejudice. It shaped who owned land, who could enter schools, and who could stand at a public water tank, long before it shaped who could afford a camera. The 1980s, now romanticised through retro aesthetics of chiffon sarees and vintage cars, was also a decade of severe deprivation. In 1983, the Planning Commission estimated that 44.5% of Indians lived below the poverty line, and by 1980 only about a quarter of households had electricity. Parliament passed the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act only in 1989, years after events such as the 1985 Karamchedu massacre in Andhra Pradesh, where caste violence against Dalits led to the founding of the Andhra Pradesh Dalit Mahasabha.
The Ambedkarite tradition insisted that caste could not be fixed through individual upper-caste goodwill; it needed structural correction through law, reservation, and political representation. This is precisely the distinction at stake in the debate over whether caste has 'lost relevance' in a modern, multicultural India. As NCERT textbooks themselves note, formal caste-based discrimination is outlawed, but the effects of centuries of unequal access to education, land, and now technology continue to be felt, and caste remains disproportionately linked to who occupies the urban middle class. The family photograph, the very genre that nostalgia depends on, required money, a studio, and social standing that mostly savarna, urban, and landed households possessed in that period.
Generative AI image models are trained on vast archives of existing visual material: film stills, magazine spreads, studio portraits, and family albums. In India, all four of these sources were overwhelmingly produced by and for savarna, urban households in the period being recreated. Dalit and Adivasi lives were photographed too, but usually by the state for welfare records, by activists documenting an atrocity, or by anthropologists studying a community from outside. That kind of photograph is taken to document; the family photograph is taken simply to be seen and cherished. A model trained on this skewed archive does not just miss the excluded lives, it reproduces their absence and, when asked to imagine them, falls back on stereotype. …
