Background

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is one of the prizes created under Alfred Nobel's will. It rewards work that has done the greatest good for humankind. It is awarded each year by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. In 2026, the prize went jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel. They won for their work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Optogenetics is a method that lets scientists turn specific nerve cells on or off using light.

Nerve cells, or neurons, send signals through brief electrical pulses called action potentials. An action potential is the short burst of electrical change that travels along a nerve fibre. Explaining how this electrical signal moves along a neuron was itself a landmark discovery. In 1952, Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley built a mathematical model of this process. They later won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for it. Optogenetics builds on this older understanding of neuronal electricity. It gives researchers a way to actively control a neuron's activity, not just observe it.

The new discovery began with simple curiosity. Peter Hegemann studied why the single-celled alga Chlamydomonas swims towards light. Georg Nagel then identified the protein responsible: channelrhodopsin. Channelrhodopsin is a light-gated ion channel. A light-gated ion channel is a channel in a cell's membrane that opens only when struck by light of a certain colour. Blue light opens the channel, letting ions flow in to create an electrical signal. Karl Deisseroth then turned this algal protein into a precise, light-controlled switch. He could place this switch inside animal neurons.

The Topic Explained

Optogenetics is a method that uses light-sensitive proteins to control specific cells with light. Scientists use a harmless virus, called a viral vector, to carry the gene for a light-sensitive protein. Channelrhodopsin is one example. The gene goes into chosen target cells. Once the protein forms inside these cells, a precise pulse of light opens the channel. This triggers a signal. Only the targeted cells carry this protein. So scientists can affect one exact group of neurons without disturbing the rest of the brain.

This precision is what makes optogenetics so useful. Older brain-study methods, such as electrical stimulation or drugs, affected whole regions of tissue at once. …
