Economics as a Discipline

The Basics

Economics studies how people use scarce resources. Scarce means limited, not enough for everyone. Resources are land, labour, capital and time. People have many wants, but resources are few. This gap is called scarcity. For example, a family has limited money but many needs. So economics studies how to use resources well.

Economic Systems: Market, Planned and Mixed Economy

The Basics

An economic system decides who chooses what, how and for whom goods are produced. History gives us three such systems. This choice exists because of scarcity. Scarcity means resources are limited, but wants are unlimited. Land, labour, capital and raw materials are all scarce. Because of this, no society can produce everything people want. So every economic system must choose what to produce, how to produce it, and for whom. This is why an economic system is needed to decide these choices.

Role of the State in the Economy

The Basics

The state's role means the jobs a government does in the economy. Governments do not leave everything to the market. Governments act in three ways. First, as a regulator. A regulator makes and enforces rules for everyone. Second, as a producer of private goods. These are goods sold for profit, like a company selling phones. Third, as a supplier of public goods. Public goods are given free or cheap, because they help people's welfare. Example: free healthcare. Ownership means who legally owns a firm or asset, state or private. Ownership alone does not explain state action. A state firm can fail the public just like a private one. What matters is market failure, not who owns the firm.
